A Step in the Right Direction: Chris Bloore MP Visits Gordon Moody Treatment Centre
On 18th February, Gordon Moody welcomed Chris Bloore, MP for Redditch, to our treatment centre for an important discussion on gambling-related harms, treatment provisions, and the future of funding within the sector. This visit represents a significant step forward in establishing parliamentary support for our mission and ensuring that residential treatment remains a key component of the gambling harm support landscape.
Strengthening Parliamentary Ties
The visit provided an opportunity to introduce Chris Bloore MP to the crucial work we do in Redditch and beyond. As the only residential treatment provider in the UK for individuals experiencing severe gambling addiction, Gordon Moody plays an essential role in supporting those in need. During his visit, Chris was given a tour of our facilities, met with treatment specialists and residents, and gained first-hand insight into the impact of our evidence-based approach to recovery.
By engaging directly with our staff and residents, Chris was able to see how our programme transforms lives and contributes positively to the local community, both in terms of treatment support and employment.
Addressing Key Challenges
During the visit, we highlighted our concerns about the upcoming statutory Gambling Levy and the uncertainty surrounding its implementation. While we welcome the levy as a means of increasing overall funding for gambling treatment, we emphasised the need for clarity regarding:
- The future of funding for residential treatment programmes like ours.
- The role of competitive commissioning and its impact on service continuity.
- How NICE guidelines will accommodate residential treatment.
- Ensuring that third-sector expertise, such as ours, is heard and included in the transition process.
With the right implementation, the levy has the potential to support more individuals struggling with gambling harm. However, without careful consideration and representation of residential treatment providers, there is a risk that crucial services may be overlooked, limiting access for those who need it most.
Seeking Action and Support
Chris Bloore MP has shown a strong commitment to mental health and social care issues, and we are optimistic that his engagement with us will lead to meaningful advocacy at the parliamentary level.
A Positive Step Forward
The visit concluded with a group photo and a commitment to ongoing dialogue. We are grateful to Chris Bloore MP for taking the time to understand the challenges we face and for his willingness to support our work.
At Gordon Moody, we remain dedicated to ensuring that those experiencing gambling harm receive the support they need. We will continue to push for clarity, representation, and sustainable funding to safeguard the future of residential treatment.
Stay tuned for updates on our advocacy efforts as we work to secure a brighter future for gambling harm support services.
